A 6-pointer in every sense

This weekend was vital for Fumel FC and Villeneuve FC. They faced each other in not only a derby, but also a bottom-of-the-table clash, a real 6-pointer. On a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon and in a frosty crosswind, the two sides kicked off, and Fumel took the lead with the first attack of the match.  At half time however, the home side trailed 2-1, after two rather unfortunate goals for the opposition. The first goal for bottom of the table Villeneuve was tapped in after the ball fell favourably to an attacker after a good save from Fumel’s keeper. The second was rather calamitous, one for the blooper reel. A young defender making a rare start in the senior team didn’t put enough weight behind his pass to the keeper, and the opposing striker obliged by slotting the free ball into the back of the net. Just as the sides came out the tunnel for the second half, the snow began to fall and conditions became even bitterer. The crosswind coupled with snowflakes made visibility extremely poor.
The second half began as the first had ended, with Villeneuve scoring somewhat fortuitously. The ball pin-balled around the area after a corner and was tapped in by Villeneuve.  Fumel, somewhat deflated, turned on each other, and the ref, who was on the receiving end of some choice insults. All this distracted the team, who duly fell 4-1 down. Deservedly we pulled one back after some good interplay between our two strikers, but in search of two more goals for a vital point, we sacrificed a fifth goal at the death. So Villeneuve leapfrog us, leaving Fumel-Libos FC at the bottom of Promotion de 1ere Division (Poule A)
